EWG Research Shows 22 Percent of All Cosmetics May Be Contaminated With Cancer-Causing Impurity

New Product Tests Find Contaminant Above Government-Recommended Limits


Many of the cosmetic industry's chemical safety assessments reveal that common petroleum-based cosmetic ingredients can be contaminated with a cancer-causing impurity called 1,4-dioxane. Studies show that this chemical readily penetrates the skin. EPA classifies it as a probable human carcinogen, and the National Toxicology Program considers it a known animal carcinogen. Although companies can easily remove it from ingredients during manufacture, tests documenting its common presence in products show that they often don't, leaving their customers at risk for potential chronic and widespread exposures to this cancer-causing compound.

In a new, computerized assessment of ingredients in 15,000 cosmetics and other personal care products, Environmental Working Group (EWG) researchers found that 22 percent of all products may be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, based on its common presence in workhorse detergent-like ingredients that the cosmetics industry uses in a wide array of products. This finding is confirmed by new product tests finding this cancer-causing chemical in 18 of more than two dozen products, including 15 products for babies and children.

Our analysis shows that 1,4-dioxane may be present in 57% of all baby soaps, and 34% of all body lotions. The potential for contamination with 1,4-dioxane is highest for 11 of 62 product types assessed, where the contaminant could be found in at least one-third, and up to 97 percent, of all products:

  • 97% - hair relaxers
  • 82% - hair dyes and bleaching
  • 66% - hair removers
  • 57% - baby soap
  • 45% - sunless tanning products
  • 43% - body firming lotion
  • 36% - hormonal creams
  • 36% - facial moisturizers
  • 35% - anti-aging products
  • 34% - body lotion
  • 33% - around-eye creams

When it comes to harmful impurities in cosmetics, 1,4-dioxane is just the tip of the iceberg. Our analyses show that 80 percent of all products may be contaminated with one or more of the two dozen recognized cosmetic impurities that are linked to cancer and other health concerns. These trace contaminants in petroleum-based ingredients often readily penetrate the skin according to government and industry studies, and their presence in products is not restricted by government safety standards — they are legal at any level.

In our 2004 online survey of the cosmetics and personal care products used by 2,300 people, we found that impurities are so ubiquitous that one of every five adults is potentially exposed every day to all of the top seven carcinogenic impurities common to personal care product ingredients — hydroquinone, ethylene dioxide, 1,4-dioxane, formaldehyde, nitrosamines, PAHs, and acrylamide. The top most common impurity ranked by number of people exposed is hydroquinone, which is a potential contaminant in products used daily by 94 percent of all women and 69 percent of all men, and which is the subject of a recent FDA proposal to regulate all products containing the chemical as drugs.

FDA, the agency that regulates the safety of personal care products, cannot require safety testing of products before they are sold, and does not systematically assess the safety of ingredients. Instead, the cosmetic industry polices the safety of its own products through a safety panel that is run and funded by the industry's trade association. In the absence of mandated testing or even Agency guidance on product safety, some companies make products safe enough to eat, while other companies add carcinogens to their formulations. Until cosmetic safety standards are overhauled, consumers must choose products carefully, with an eye toward avoiding potentially hazardous ingredients.

As a start, we recommend that consumers choose products free of carcinogenic impurities. To avoid 1,4-dioxane, read ingredient labels and avoid any of the 56 cosmetic ingredients that can contain the contaminant, including "sodium laureth sulfate" and ingredients that include the clauses "PEG," "xynol," "ceteareth," and "oleth." I use oxy-cleanse daily. Twice yearly I use the following liver cleanse. Mike White, Optimal Breathing Development Trainer

My blood oxygen, as measured with a Pulse Oximeter, increased two percentage points within 2 days after the cleanse.  Weeks later it was the same increase without exercise. Gladly  I can now  refocus on my walking, weight training and breathing exercising as I had purposefully neglected them to better isolate the liver cleanse and liquid oxygen influences.

Next to and sometimes even senior to eliminating shortness of breath or other breathing restrictions, the liver cleanse has to be almost always second on my list of accelerated healing methods.   

When the liver dysfunctions it puts stress on all systems. The liver is a primary organ of detoxification. So is the breath and so is the colon and kidneys. Toxins that the liver is supposed to but does not address end up in the lungs, kidneys, lymphatic system and colon. The colon will reabsorb them if they are not eliminated from the body within hours of their arrival. Once the lymphatic system gets saturated with toxins it takes perhaps weeks to remove them as the lymph is very dense and moves very slowly. Toxins reduce oxygen supply which makes the lungs less efficient and the heart work harder. A major food toxin to the liver is animal fat including pasteurized butter.   

Those that do breathing exercises without attending to the liver may be inadvertently trying to make the lungs do the work of the liver? They can't. But the lungs and liver are synergistic. They need each other. You can not live without either. Take the breathing tests before and after a liver cleanse and see how they are influenced by the liver cleanse.

Spring is a particularly good time to cleanse - So is any other time except perhaps winter.- Living foods begin to surface from the ground in spring. We replenish our minerals and food enzymes with fresh raw organic fruits and vegetables in solid and fresh juice form. Raw is mostly better but moderate cooking is better than no fruits and vegetables at all.

This liver cleanse procedure has been in the public domain for many generations. It effectively and painlessly removes all stones, gravel, crystals and debris that hinder healing and the ability to detoxify pollutants from the gallbladder and the liver and cleanses the liver bile ducts.

Purpose:

Cleansing the liver of gall stones dramatically improves digestion which is the basis of your whole health. You can expect many or all of your allergies to disappear, too, more and more with each subsequent cleanse. Each liver cleanse "cures" a different set of allergies, suggesting that the liver is compartmentalized - different parts having different duties. It follows that by getting all the stones out, all allergies will disappear! Well - incredibly, a liver cleanse has eliminated shoulder, upper arm and upper back pain.

Introduction:

One of the top jobs of the liver to make bile, 1 to 1 1/2 quarts in a day! The liver is full of tubes (biliary tubules) that deliver the bile to one large tube, the common bile duct. The gall bladder is attached to the common bile duct and acts as a storage reservoir. Eating fat or protein triggers the gall bladder to squeeze itself empty after about twenty minutes (or after ingesting the liver cleanse solution) and the stored bile finishes its trip down the common bile duct to the small intestine and eventually to the colon (large intestine). Of course the gall bladder does not hold enough bile to neutralize all of the liver cleanse solution you have ingested and the empty gallbladder signals its master, the liver, to dump all available bile forcefully into the common bile duct as well and in this fashion the liver turns itself practically inside out and empties all of its available bile together with stones, gravel and crystals to condition that potent liver cleanse solution. The Epsom salt serves to relax the tubules so that the passage of larger stones is painless and smooth.

For many persons, including children, the biliary ducts (tubing) are choked with gallstones. Some develop allergies or hives but some have no symptoms at all. When the gall bladder is scanned or X-rayed, nothing is seen. Typically, the worst stones are not in the gallbladder but in the liver. Not only that, most are too small and not calcified, a pre-requisite for visibility on X-ray. There are over half a dozen variety of gallstones, most of which have cholesterol crystals in them. They can be black, red, white, green or tan colored. The green ones get their color from being coated with bile. Notice in the picture (of Dr. Hulda Clark's books) how many have imbedded unidentified objects. Are they fluke remains? Notice how many are shaped like corks with longitudinal grooves below the tops. We can visualize the blocked bile ducts from such shapes. Other stones are composites - made from smaller ones - showing that they regrouped in the bile duct some time after the last cleanse.

At the very center of each stone scientists found a clump of bacteria, suggesting a dead bit of parasite might have started the stone forming. Maybe it is the liver's method to encapsulate parasite adults to avoid getting destroyed by such an invader. That's fine for one or two, but how about thousands of such encapsulations?

Eventually the fine self-defense turns into an immense blockage that keeps the liver from detoxifying and eliminating harmful substances such as solvents and parasites. You see, as the stones grow and become more numerous, the back pressure on the liver causes it to make less bile which is of course the transportation medium for the undesirable substances. Imagine the situation if your garden hose had marbles in it. Much less water would flow, which in turn would decrease the ability of the hose to squirt out the marbles. With gallstones and liver stones, much less excess cholesterol leaves the body and cholesterol levels may rise.

Also, gall/liver stones, being porous, can pick up bacteria, cysts, viruses and parasite stages that are passing through the liver. In this way, "nests" of infection are formed, forever supplying the body with fresh irritating bacteria. No stomach infection such as ulcers or intestinal bloating can be cured permanently without removing these stones from the gallbladder and liver.

Preparation:

Cleansing the liver bile ducts is the most powerful procedure you can undertake in order to improve your body's health. A liver cleanse should be done twice a year if possible. Ideally, it should be part of a semi-annual liver/parasite cleanse the sequence of which enhances the overall results.

Phase I (optional): Though some are not sensitive to amalgam fillings, those that are may do any dental work first, if possible. Your mouth should be metal free and bacteria free and all cavitations should have been cleaned. A toxic mouth can put a heavy load on the liver, burdening it immediately after cleansing. Eliminate any tooth problem first for best results. If this is not possible then go to the liver cleanse anyway.

Phase II (also optional): Completing a parasite cleanse before cleansing the liver is also highly recommended but not mandatory. You want your kidneys, bladder and urinary tract in top condition so they can efficiently remove any substances incidentally absorbed from the intestines as the bile is being secreted.

Parasite. Dr.  Hulda Clark maintains that you can't clean a liver with living parasites in it and that you won't get as many stones out, and you may feel quite sick.   While this is Dr. Clark’s recommendation,  it is to me an " ideal" situation. We have seen many copious stone discharges without the  parasite cleanse prior to the liver cleanse.

Phase III (mandatory):

Drink fresh, organic un-pasteurized apple juice for three days preceding the liver cleanse. For these three days, eat frugally (little) if you must and then only small amounts of raw unprocessed fruit and/or vegetable salads, but every day take at least one full quart of high quality unfiltered (you should be able to see the sediments on the bottom of the container) preferable home-made apple juice. The pectin in the apple juice helps to soften and flatten the stones in the gall bladder and liver. This will also help their passage through the bile ducts. This semi-fast also empties the intestines of their food content and makes the collection of stones less problematic. Use a good juicer and make up 20-30 pounds of apples into juice and refrigerate. 

If sugar form the juice in relationship to candida is a problem I believe that doing this cleanse is senior to candida worries - for three to four days - as it helps rid the body of parasites. Candida is a parasite as well. Diabetes or severe reactions from this cleanse need special guidance from a professional nutritionist. 

Liver cleanse ingredients:

Epsom salts 4 table spoons (not less !!!)

Olive oil 3/4 of a cup (light olive oil is easier to get down, use only the best cold pressed virgin oil)

Fresh grapefruit and lemons. Do not use concentrate or store-bought juice. Make your own. Enough to squeeze 1/4 cup of lemon and 1/2 cup of grapefruit juice.

Ornithine (optional)4 to 8, to be sure you can sleep. Suitable jar with non-metallic lid. Shake your mixture well and gulp it down 1/2 cup of lemon/grapefruit juice Use a couple of ounces of this juice each time to help get down the

Epsom salt solution (four feedings) if desired

Phase V - (Procedure):

Choose a day like Saturday for the cleanse so that you can rest the next day.

Take no medicines, vitamins or other pills that you can do without. They could hinder success of the cleanse. Stop any parasite or kidney cleanse the day before.

Eat a no-fat fruit breakfast and light fat-free lunch such as cooked cereals with fruit but no butter or milk. This allows the bile to build up and develop pressure in the liver. Higher pressure pushes out more stones.

2:00 PM. Do not eat or drink after 2:00 o'clock. If you break this rule you could feel quite ill later. Get your Epsom salts ready. Mix 4 tablespoons in 3 cups of water and pour this into a jar. This makes four servings, 3/4 cup each. Place the jar in the refrigerator to get ice cold (this is for convenience and taste only). If you are familiar with the procedure, take an enema before 4:00 PM with distilled (not chlorinated) warm water to clean out your large intestines of any unwanted fecal matter. The cleaner your intestines are the easier it will be for the stones to be eliminated. Besides, if you want to see just what you will be eliminating it is more appetizing to look only for stones and not be turned off by other smelly stuff.

6:00 PM. Drink one serving (3/4 cup) of the ice cold Epsom salts water. If you did not prepare this potion ahead of time (at 2:00 PM), mix 1 tablespoon in 3/4 cup of water now. You may add 1/8 teaspoon of vitamin C powder to improve the taste. If you have no vitamin C powder then add a little citrus juice to improve the taste; but this is entirely optional. You can certainly drink a few mouthfuls of water afterwards or rinse your mouth.

Get the olive oil and grapefruit out to warm up.

8:00 PM. Repeat the above by drinking another 3/4 cup of Epsom salts water. You have not eaten since two o'clock, but you won't feel hungry. Get your bedtime chores done now.

Switch your telephone to your answering machine and be prepared to stay by yourself for the balance of the evening. The timing of the actual cleanse is critical to achieve success. Do not be more than 10 minutes early or late for anything that follows next.

9:45 PM. Pour 3/4 cup (measured cup) of your high quality olive oil into the pint jar. Pour the prepared 3/4 cup of squeezed grapefruit and lemon juice into the measuring cup adding this to the oil. Close the jar tightly with its lid and shake briskly until well mixed, almost watery. Only fresh squeezed juice will do this.

Now visit the bathroom one or more times, even if this makes you slightly late for your ten o'clock drink. Be ready to go to bed and STAY in bed. Don't clean up the kitchen. Do it the next day.

10:00 PM. Take the solution to your bedside if you want but drink it standing up. Drink the potion you have mixed. If you have them, take four Ornithine capsules with the first sips to make sure you will sleep through the night. Take eight if you already suffer from insomnia. Drinking through a large plastic straw might help it go down easier. Get all of it down within five minutes or less (less than fifteen minutes for very elderly or weak persons).

Lie down immediately. The sooner you lie down, otherwise gravity can invite too fast a transition of the Epsom salts liquids, the more stones you will get out. Put your knees up to your chest in a fetal position. Lie on your right side for at least half an hour. The oil will go to your gallbladder and liver. These organs will not know what to do with all that oil, so they will spasm and throw off all the available bile plus stones, gravel and crystals.

After half an hour you may turn on your back with a good thick feather pillow. Try to think about what is happening in the liver. Think loving thoughts - your liver is sensitive and responsive to feelings of resentment, vindictiveness and hate. Try to keep perfectly still for about half an hour or at least 20 minutes. Visualize the cleansing action taking place. You may feel a train of stones traveling along the bile ducts like marbles. There is little likelihood of pain because the bile duct valves are open (thanks to the Epsom salts). Relax and go to sleep. Let nature do her thing. Tomorrow you will be cleaner, much cleaner and also healthier than before.

Next morning (early): Upon wakening, take your third dose of Epsom salts. If you have indigestion or nausea (highly unlikely), wait until this is gone before drinking the Epsom salts. Don't take this potion before 6:00 AM. It would be best if you don't get up and have someone else give you this potion. This drink will act as a mild laxative and provoke a later bowel movement.

2 hours later. Take you fourth (the last one - Yupee!) dose of Epsom salts. Drink 3/4 cup of the mixture. You may go back to bed if you like.

After 2 more hours you may get up and take something into your empty stomach. Start with some fresh-made fruit juice. Half an hour later, eat some fruit. One hour later you may eat regular food but keep it light and natural. By supper of the next day (Monday) you should feel fully recovered and ready to slay a dragon.

How well did you do? Expect diarrhea in the morning of the second day (Sunday). The ideal way to see what you are actually eliminating is to defecate into a white porcelain bowl or large white plastic bucket. The bowl or bucket is used to also see the reddish crystals which collect at the bottom of the bowl (the stones float on top) and those crystals would ordinarily be lost somewhere at the bottomless hole in the toilet and you would have missed them. The alternative is to use the toilet and look into it for the stones with a flashlight. Look for the greenish kind since this is proof that they are genuine gallstones and not food residue. Only bile from the liver is green. The bowel movement (if there is any) sinks but gall and liver stones float because of the cholesterol inside. Count them roughly, whether tan or green. You may have to eliminate up to 2000 stones before the liver is clean enough to rid you of allergies or bursitis or upper back pain permanently. The first cleanse may rid you of them for a few days but as the stones from the rear of the liver travel forward they might give you the same symptoms again. You may repeat this gallbladder/liver cleanse at two-week intervals until no more stones come out. Never cleanse when you are ill.

Sometimes, the bile ducts are full of cholesterol crystals that did not form into round stones. They appear as a "chaff" floating on top of the toilet bowl water. It may be tan colored, harboring millions of tiny white crystals. Cleansing this chaff is just as important as purging stones. We don't know what is the identity of the reddish heavy small crystals that collect at the bottom of the bowl.

How safe is the liver cleanse? It is very safe. Dr. Clark's opinion is based on over 500 cases, including many persons in their seventies and eighties. None went to the hospital; none even reported pain. However, it can make you feel quite ill for a one or two days afterwards, although in every one of these cases the maintenance parasite program had been neglected. This is why the instructions direct you to ideally complete the parasite and kidney rinse programs first.

Conclusion:

The above procedure contradicts many modern medical viewpoints. Gallstones are thought to be few, not thousands. They don't get linked to pains other than gall bladder attacks. It is easy to understand why this is thought: By the time you have acute pain attacks, some stones are in the gallbladder, are big enough and sufficiently calcified to be seen on X-ray, and they have caused inflammation there.

When the gall bladder is removed, the acute pain attack is gone but bursitis and other pains and digestive problems remain and get worse. Stones are not thought to reside in the liver. If the liver is operated upon only the biggest and worst offenders can be removed - yet uncountable stones and gravel and crystals remain in the already clogged liver which has not improved at all.

People who have their gallbladder surgically removed still eliminate plenty of green, bile-coated stones with this liver cleanse and anyone who cares to dissect their stones can see that the concentric circles and crystals of cholesterol match textbook pictures of "gallstones" exactly.

Note:

If you feel waves of pain reaching up to your throat, you probably have a gallstone stuck in a bile duct (clay-colored stool is evidence of bile duct blockage). Epsom salts can relax that bile duct in 20 minutes. Take a tablespoon in 3/4 cup of water but only on an empty stomach or you may feel quite ill. Taking a large dose of valerian herb (6 to 8 capsules four times a day including bedtime) may also buy you a little time by relaxing the duct. If you do get relief, you can be sure it was a spasm of the bile duct system. The magnesium in the Epsom salts relaxes spasms. It would be best to clean the liver a number of times (at two week intervals unless too ill) to try to dislodge the sticking gallstone. Usually it is recommended to kill parasites and cleanse the kidneys first.

A quick word about parasites. Infested humans, pets coupled with international travel, help spread parasites. They are much more predominant then in early non airplane days. For parasites try  both oxycleanse , Paragone and huldaclark.com.  Get Paragone direct or from your local health food store.

To obtain permanent liver health, one should control the intake of high fat foods such as ice cream, potato chips, salad dressings, cheese, butter if not raw, cream and pasteurized or homogenized milk. Feelings of resentment, vindictiveness, belligerence and hate are destructive to liver health. Avoid these at all cost!!! Forget the 'bad' others have done to you and forget the 'good' you have done to others. Learn to forgive!

WHAT IS CONSTIPATION?

Constipation is a slowed rate of digestion and elimination that does not keep up with how much food one eats.

If you eat three meals a day, spread out throughout over about 12 hours, you should have right around three bowel movements (BMs) each day.

If you eat three squares a day plus snacks and you only have one BM a day on average, then you are definitely constipated.

If you have a BM once every two or three days, you are very constipated.

Those folks able to go only once a week, or less often, are seriously constipated and should not delay in correcting this condition.

Why is constipation a problem?

CONSTIPATION IS AN UNNATURAL CONDITION

. . . but it's increasing at an alarming rate!

Due to poor eating habits, it has become increasingly clear that almost every person in this country over six years old is developing serious problems in the intestinal tract. In later years this usually results in the development of various acute, chronic and degenerative diseases. Such diseases include cancer, heart trouble and diabetes; as well as lack of energy, premature aging, poor eyesight, memory loss, a poor complexion, bad breath, sexual dysfunction and various forms of chronic pain. It is estimated that over 98% of disease can be contributed directly or indirectly to a compromised digestive tract. As Dr. Bernard Jensen says, "It is the bowel that invariably has to be cared for first before any effective healing can take place."

LOW ENERGY LEVEL?

People suffer from malnutrition and auto-intoxication (self-poisoning), which result in disease, parasites and filth, all because of a gradual buildup of many pockets of uneliminated waste matter. The healthy colon weighs about four pounds, an unhealthy one can weigh more than twice as much. Few people realize that the same unhealthy substances found in the colon can also abound in the stomach, duodenum and small intestine.

A POLLUTED INTESTINAL TRACT

. . . means dirty blood, poor digestion and low energy.

When the intestines have too much waste matter, parasites, fungus and harmful bacteria, there results a serious interference with the digestive process. Even if a person's intestinal tract were polluted with just a mild amount of this undesirable filth, he or she could have sluggish peristaltic action, which is constipational. How does the body adjust to cooked food, processed food and refined food - dead foods?

in her book, "12 Steps to Raw Food", explains it this way: "The body creates mucus and uses this mucus as a filter. All the surfaces of the digestive tract that are designed to absorb the nutrients from food become covered with mucus film that protects blood from toxins. The mucus film begins at the tongue and continues all the way through the intestines. Many people can see this mucus on their tongue. People who have a thick mucus coating on their intestines usually have white tongues as if they just ate sour cream. The body creates a little mucus, to begin with, to filter out the toxins from the dead food. The more dead food we consume, the more mucus the body produces as a protection. The more harmful the food substances are to the body, the more this mucous film builds up. As the years go by it becomes thicker and harder. Portions of this thick mucus get pushed into pockets called diverticuli as we cram through more and more dead food into the digestive tract in an effo rt to squeeze some nutritional value out of it.

Bottled vs Tap Water

My friends:  Given the prevalence of bottled water these days, I've been aware of warnings against a detrimental chemical that leaches out of the plastic containers.  Here is a pretty good summary of what's currently known about this problem.   How do I handle it?  For years I've used a good undersink filtering system.  But, I carry the water around in - plastic bottles!  Sigh.  Time to switch over to a steel coffee carrier, I guess, despite the additional bulk and weight.      ...Bev

Q: Yesterday my daughter told me I should stop buying bottled water because the plastic bottles are toxic. I thought bottled water was healthier than drinking fluoridated, chlorinated tap water, so now I'm thoroughly confused -- and worried. Can you tell me what to believe?

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright: Well, you and your daughter are both right. Most municipal water supplies do contain fluoride and chlorine, which have both been implicated in numerous health concerns. So bottled water does seem like the wise alternative. However, the plastic bottles holding that water contain a substance called bisphenol A, a chemical that mimics estrogen activity in both humans and animals. Bisphenol A is a potential carcinogen and may also increase your risk of Type II diabetes.

Unfortunately, avoiding it isn't as easy as boycotting bottled water: Bisphenol A is one of the 50 top-produced chemicals in the world. And in addition to being the building block of most plastic products, it's also one of the primary ingredients in the resins used to line over 100 billion different canned products.

Given its prevalence, at this point it's nearly impossible to completely avoid bisphenol A. But giving up bottled water is a start, and every little bit helps. Instead, invest in a high-quality water filter that will eliminate the potentially harmful chemicals from your tap water (and make sure to use only filtered water to make ice cubes).

Study Uncovers Memory Aid: A Scent During Sleep

Scientists studying how sleep affects memory have found that the whiff of a
familiar scent can help a slumbering brain better remember things that it
learned the evening before. The smell of roses — delivered to people’s nostrils
as they studied and, later, as they slept — improved their performance on a
memory test by about 13 percent.


The new study, appearing today in the journal Science, is the first rigorous
test of the effect of odor on human memory during sleep. The results,
whether or not they can help students cram for tests, clarify the picture of what
the sleeping brain does with newly learned material and help illuminate what
it takes for this process to succeed.


Researchers have long known that sleep is crucial to laying down new
memories, and studies in the 1980s and ’90s showed that exposing the sleeping brain
to certain cues — the sound of clicking, for instance — could enhance the
process. But it is only in recent years that scientists have begun to
understand how this is possible.


“The idea didn’t get any traction with scientists back then, because it didn
’t make sense,” said Dr. Robert Stickgold, an associate professor of
psychiatry at Harvard, who was not involved in the research. The new study, Dr.
Stickgold added, “shows not only that sleep is important for declarative memory,
but also allows us to look at exactly when and how this process might happen.”

In the study, neuroscientists from two German institutions, the

University

of

Lübeck

and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, had groups of
medical students play a version of concentration, memorizing the location of
card pairs on a computer screen. Upon learning the location of each pair, the
students received a burst of rose scent in their noses through masks they
wore. The researchers delivered the fragrance in bursts because the brain
quickly adjusts to strong smells in the air and begins to ignore them.
The students went to sleep about a half-hour later, with electrodes on their
heads tracking the depth of their slumber. Neuroscientists divide sleep into
stages, including deep (or slow wave) sleep and the shallow, dream-rich
state called rapid eye movement (or REM) sleep.


The brain is thought to process newly acquired facts, figures and locations
most efficiently in deep sleep. This restful state usually descends within
the first 20 minutes or so after head meets pillow and may last an hour or
longer, then recur once or more later in the night. The researchers delivered
pulses of rose bouquet during this slow-wave state; the odor did not interrupt
sleep, and the students said they had no memory of it.


But their brains noticed, and retained an almost perfect memory of card
locations. The students scored an average of 97 percent on the card game,
compared with 86 percent when they played the game and slept without being perfumed
by nighttime neuroscience fairies.


The students did not get the same boost when they received bursts of the
fragrance just before sleep or in REM sleep rather than in deep slumber, and
their improvements were not due to practice, the study found.
The study’s results could eventually help doctors improve patients’ memory
by devising treatments directed at deep sleep. As they age, people spend less
and less time each night in such sleep, and existing sleep medications do
not generally increase it. But pharmaceutical companies are investigating
compounds that do so.


Previous research has shown that regions of the cortex, the thinking and
planning part of the brain, communicate during deep sleep with a sliver of
tissue deeper in the brain called the hippocampus, which records each day’s
memories. What is most likely happening in that communication, the study’s authors
argue, is that the cortex is telling the hippocampus to reactivate the same
neurons that fired when a particular fact was noticed or learned. The
hippocampus does so, encoding the firing sequence in the cortex and thereby
consolidating the memory.


“We would expect spontaneous reactivation driven by the slow-wave sleep, but
by presenting the rose odor cues we intensified this activation and enhanced
the transfer of these memories,” said Dr. Jan Born, a neuroscientist at
Lübeck who undertook the study with Björn Rasch, Christian Büchel and Steffen
Gais.


Olfactory sensing pathways in the brain lead more directly to the
hippocampus than do visual and auditory ones. That may be why smells can so vividly
revive things past like forgotten joys or humiliations.


To check their reasoning, the researchers took M.R.I. images of some of the
students’ brains during their rose-scented slumber. As expected, regions of
the cortex became noticeably more active, as did the hippocampus.
The findings suggest that distinct sleep states may be specialized to
integrate different kinds of information. For example, the researchers found that
the rose scent did not enhance memories of a learned finger-tapping sequence —
a rhythmic memory that does not appear to be consolidated by the
hippocampus.


Likewise, given that the rose fragrance during REM sleep made no difference
to the students’ scores, it may be that the hues, horrors and hilarity of
dreams during REM reflect the brain’s efforts to integrate emotional, rather
than factual, memories, said Dr. Stickgold, of Harvard.


“Extracting patterns and rules and what we call the gist of a memory might
turn out to be antithetical to the process of nailing down the facts
themselves,” Dr. Stickgold said. “So, for instance, you might use REM to integrate
one, and slow-wave sleep for the other.”


The new findings hardly close the book on how memories are formed and
consolidated during sleep. Other scientists have found evidence that rather than
reactivation, the brain’s slow-wave state induces an overall weakening of
neuron-to-neuron signaling, making recently recorded memories look bolder by
reducing the background neural “noise.” And it may be, Dr. Born said, that both
processes are occurring during sleep: a pruning away of the noise of the day’s
irrelevant observations, and a replaying of its important ones.


Either way, the researchers said, the new findings are likely to prompt some
creative thinking on the part of students facing the terror of final exams.
(The German research group has preliminary evidence that acrid smells may be
even better in enhancing memory.)


“We use an apparatus to sense the onset of slow-wave sleep and deliver the
odor” in short, alternating bursts, Dr. Born said, adding, “I suppose for
some students it would not be too difficult to develop something like this.”
That’s what engineering departments are for.

Facts on honey and cinnamon

It is found that a mixture of honey and cinnamon cures most diseases.  Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a "Ram Ban" (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases.  Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.

Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients.  Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, on its issue dated 17 January, 1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast.  It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack.  Also those who have already had an attack, if they do this pro cess daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack.  Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat.  In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins.

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily, morning, and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder.  If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.  In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before break f ast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it.  It destroys the germs in the bladder.

TOOTHACHE: Make a paste of one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of honey and apply on the aching tooth.  This may be applied three times a day until the tooth stops aching.

CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours.  As mentioned fo r arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured.  According to information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days.  This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses.

UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks.  Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts.  Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bac teria and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ingredient which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age.  Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder and three cups of water and boil to make like tea.  Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day.  It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age.  Life spans also increases and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

PIMPLES:  Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste.  Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water.  If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water.  If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully.  Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month three times a day.

FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body.  Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible.  Dr.  Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 p.m. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality&nb sp;of t he body within a week.

BAD BREATH: People of South America, first thing in the morning, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restore hearing.

Pecan Raisin Balls Recipe

Pecan-Raisin Balls Recipe

Ingredients:

1 lb. pecans

1/4 cup rolled oats

10 pitted dates

2 tablespoons of almond butter or raw tahini

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 teaspoon of all-natural vanilla extract

1 cup pre-soaked raisins (2 hours), drained on a dish towel

   Directions:

   Finely grind pecans and oats in a food processor. Set aside in a

medium to large bowl. Use food processor to blend dates, almond

butter or raw tahini, cinnamon, and vanilla into a paste.

   Mix paste into finely ground pecan-oat mixture using clean hands

or a wooden spoon. Add raisins and continue to mix gently until

raisins are well distributed. Roll mixture into small balls.

   This recipe makes about 10 balls. Enjoy!

The Diaphragm: The Spiritual Muscle

Though people talk often about the diaphragm, that large domed-shape
muscle that functions as the floor of the chest cavity and the ceiling
of the abdominal cavity, they seldom have any real sensation of its
many actions. Through its complex three-dimensional vertical,
horizontal, and angular movements, the diaphragm not only helps the
body take in the oxygen it needs but it also helps the body rid itself
of so-called waste products. Through these same movements, a healthy,
well-developed diaphragm also helps to open and close the various
breathing spaces of the body, release muscle tensions in the chest and
back, support the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the
digestive system, and the immune system, and help us communicate
verbally from deep within. A poorly functioning diaphragm makes it
difficult for the breath of life to flow through us and express itself
in a free and healthy way.

Except for our very first inhalation at birth, when the diaphragm is
functioning well the in-breath, the taking in of the energy of life,
happens as a spontaneous reflex that occurs after a full exhalation.
When we empty our lungs of everything that is no longer necessary, we
are spontaneously and effortlessly filled with fresh air. Perhaps that
is one of the reasons that some teachers call the diaphragm a
spiritual muscle, and use the analogy of the diaphragm to explain what
happens when we learn to let go of the thoughts and emotions that keep
us imprisoned in our own self-image.

Follow your breath now for a few minutes, and pay special attention to
what happens as you exhale. Do you feel that your exhalation is
complete, or does it seem to stop prematurely? Do you try to grab for
air willfully at the end of the exhalation or does the inhalation
occur by itself in the form of a wave arising from the unknown? Just
take note of what actually happens.

reported this week that a long-term
study to evaluate the potential carcinogenic effects of aspartame
demonstrates the chemical sweetener "induces an increase in lymphomas and
leukemia in female rats." The research will be presented at a September
international scientific conference, "Framing the Future in the Light of the
Past: Living in a Chemical World."

Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock M.D. commented: "The new study released in the
European Journal of oncology by Morando Soffritti and co-workers should
terrify mothers and all those consuming aspartame sweetened products. This
was a carefully done study which clearly demonstrated a statistically
significant increase in several types of lymphomas and leukemia in rats.
Both of these malignancies have increased significantly in this country
since the widespread use of aspartame.

"This study confirmed the previous study by Dr. Trocho and co-workers, which
also found the formaldehyde breakdown product of aspartame to be damaging to
cellular DNA and that this damage was accumulative. The type of damage was a
duplicate of that associated with cancers. Along with this most recent
study, this means that drinking a single diet cola sweetened with aspartame
every day could increase one's risk of developing a lymphoma or leukemia.

"They also found an increased incidence of malignant brain tumors, even
though it was not statistically significant. This does not mean there is no
association to brain tumors, since only the animals exposed to aspartame
developed the tumors. With children and pregnant women drinking the largest
amount of diet colas, this puts their children at the greatest risk of
developing one of these horrible diseases. Their study found that even low
doses of aspartame could cause these malignancies; yet, the higher the dose,
the more cancers that were seen.

"Since aspartame can increase obesity and may even cause the metabolic
syndrome that affects 48 million Americans, there is no reason to ever
consume this product. At the least it should be immediately banned from all
schools."

Dr. Blaylock wrote the Miami Herald to counteract propaganda by the Calorie
Control Council, an aspartame front group: "It is known that the amount of
toxic phenylalanine reaching the baby is twice as high as that in the
mother's blood because the placenta concentrates the toxin. In addition,
numerous metabolic breakdown products of aspartame are known to damage the
developing infant's brain, including methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid,
diketopiperizine and phenylacetate.

"Aspartame has been shown by several studies to damage DNA, which can lead
to cancer and degenerative brain disorders later in life. The risk of
increased brain tumors in such a child would be enormous. Similar mechanisms
of damage would be expected in these with liver disease. Studies on
aspartame safety have shown that the product increases tumors throughout
numerous organs, especially the brain. It was shown that brain tumor
incidence increased over 47 times in animals exposed to aspartame.

"With the public concern over childhood obesity and diabetes few are being
told of the overwhelming evidence that early exposure to excitotoxins as
found in aspartame consistently produce gross obesity and insulin resistant
diabetes, just as we are seeing in our youth. The promoters of aspartame use
have been lying from the beginning and continue to use their money and
political clout to cover up the real and present dangers of this toxic
product." Astonishingly the Miami Herald ignored Dr. Blaylock's lifesaving
cry of alarm. "Clout" in

"Aspartame Disease, an Ignored Epidemic". "In two years she developed
marketed swelling of one shoulder which then involved the neck. Her arm
almost tripled in size. ... Numerous physicians and consultants diagnosed
histiocytic leukemia. The patient received large doses of Prednisone. Of
particular interest is there was dramatic clinical improvement and virtual
normalization of the blood changes when the mother eliminated additives.
Prednisone was stopped. The patient subsequently ate several bowls of an
aspartame cereal. Marked swelling of the checks developed, coupled with
recurrence of the aforementioned features. When aspartame was discontinued,
the swelling receded without Prednisone.

"Several months later, the girl was given aspartame chewing gum without the
mother's knowledge. Swelling of her entire body, recurrent enlargement of
the liver and spleen, a dramatic increase of bone marrow histiocytes, and
severe pain in many joints ensued. Total abstinence from aspartame again
affected the disappearance of her symptoms and blood abnormalities within 6
months. At the time of Dr. Roberts last discussion with her mother, the
child had minimal enlargement of the liver, and was receiving Prednisone in
low doses only intermittently.

"The patient had two sets of head x-rays, three CT scans of the brain, two
spinal punctures, four bone marrow studies, two electroencephalograms, two
heart monitoring studies, two baraium enemas, and a host of other studies.

recently met July 12 to decide about pop: "Aspartame has been proven to
destroy brains, trigger psychiatric and behavioral problems, cause eye
disorders (including blindness), addict and trigger brain tumors."

Betty Peters, of the Alabama Board of Education asked for an amendment to
remove all soda pop from

schools, but this was reduced to simply
revise the current system and allow diet drinks, this with full knowledge
that diet drinks cause more obesity. The vending machine proposal was gutted
to appease the soft drink industry. But where was the concern for the
children?

Dr. Roberts reviewed the Italian study, concluding: "It's now incumbent upon
researchers of leukemia and lymphoma to inquire about the use of aspartame
products routinely in such patients. And it¹s also highly relevant, the
striking increase of primary brain lymphoma which I reviewed in my books and
articles. You are dealing with a unique lymphoma of the brain. which most
neurologists had not seen before the availability of aspartame. In view of
the unequivocal induction of brain tumors and of leukemia/lymphoma in
experimental animals the intent of the Delaney Amendment should be invoked.
This justifies aspartame as an imminent public health hazard and should be
removed from the market as I've emphasized for two decades."

In the "Journal of Advance in Medicine" Vol 4 #4, winter '91 article

Cancer" Dr. Roberts said: "The increasing frequency of primary brain
lymphoma of B cell derivation -- including reticulum cell sarcoma,
microglioma and histolytic lymphoma -- also requires explanation because
this subset was previously rare. Eby et al reported a nearly threefold rise
in its incidence among immunologically normal persons in the l982-l984 SEER
data, which they could not explain. Specifically, the rate increased from
2.7 to 7.5 cases per ten million population (p=0.001) in the time periods
l973-l975 and l982-l984, respectively. The age-adjusted rise was more
striking among women which increased from 4.9 per ten million in l979-l981
to 8.9 per ten million in l982-l984.

Again Dr. Roberts tells us "Hockberg and Miller reported a tripling of
incidence of this tumor in non-immunosuppressed persons during the 5 year
interval between l980 and l984."

How was aspartame ever approved by FDA? For 16 years it was rejected. FDA
even asked the Department of Justice to prosecute the manufacturer, G.D.
Searle Co. for submitting fraudulent test data on aspartame. Two prosecutors
were appointed, but the defense lawyers hired both of them and the case
expired with the statute of limitations. When the Godfather hires the
District Attorney don't expect a conviction. Next Don Rumsfeld, CEO of G D
Searle, returned to

and a new FDA commissioner was appointed
immediately who approved aspartame over the objections of the FDA scientific
board. This new commissioner was under investigation for conflict of
interest when he switched to take $1,000/day consulting job with the public
relations firm that represented NutraSweet. All in the family! The plague
loosed on humanity by this chicanery is also known as Rumsfeld's Disease.

The Italian study press release says the results demonstrate for the first
time aspartame is a carcinogenic agent -- "As recognized by the
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health
Organization, results of long-term bioassays conducted on rodents (rats and
mice) are highly predictive of carcinogenic risk for humans. In light of
this fact, the results of the CRC/ERF study on aspartame call for urgent
reconsideration of regulations governing its use as an artificial sweetener
in order to better protect public health, in particular that of children."

This is the most recent of many projects which confirms aspartame's toxicity
beyond controversy. FDA & Searle have always known aspartame is a Class A
Carcinogen. The late FDA toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress that
aspartame, beyond a shadow of a doubt can produce brain tumors and brain
cancer, and violates the Delaney Amendment which forbids anything in food
which causes cancer. His last words to Congress: "If the FDA violates its
own laws who is left to protect the public?" Ten thousand tombstones show
that only a concerned citizenry can achieve save itself from all the 92
symptoms FDA once listed.

To children aspartame is murder. It's an abortifacient and teratogen;
causing abortions, birth defects and retardation. If a live child is born
aspartame may have heinously damaged its DNA for generations to come. Our
schools are so inundated with problems that today the norm is "abnormal".
Only eradication of this poison will eliminate aspartame's physical,
behavioral, psychiatric maladies and learning disabilities. Industry's greed
is keeping it schools to addict our children for life. They even got FDA to
approve new deadly chemicals: Splenda and Acesulfame Potassium. See: "The
