Study Uncovers Memory Aid: A Scent During Sleep

Scientists studying how sleep affects memory have found that the whiff of a
familiar scent can help a slumbering brain better remember things that it
learned the evening before. The smell of roses — delivered to people’s nostrils
as they studied and, later, as they slept — improved their performance on a
memory test by about 13 percent.


The new study, appearing today in the journal Science, is the first rigorous
test of the effect of odor on human memory during sleep. The results,
whether or not they can help students cram for tests, clarify the picture of what
the sleeping brain does with newly learned material and help illuminate what
it takes for this process to succeed.


Researchers have long known that sleep is crucial to laying down new
memories, and studies in the 1980s and ’90s showed that exposing the sleeping brain
to certain cues — the sound of clicking, for instance — could enhance the
process. But it is only in recent years that scientists have begun to
understand how this is possible.


“The idea didn’t get any traction with scientists back then, because it didn
’t make sense,” said Dr. Robert Stickgold, an associate professor of
psychiatry at Harvard, who was not involved in the research. The new study, Dr.
Stickgold added, “shows not only that sleep is important for declarative memory,
but also allows us to look at exactly when and how this process might happen.”

In the study, neuroscientists from two German institutions, the

University

of

Lübeck

and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, had groups of
medical students play a version of concentration, memorizing the location of
card pairs on a computer screen. Upon learning the location of each pair, the
students received a burst of rose scent in their noses through masks they
wore. The researchers delivered the fragrance in bursts because the brain
quickly adjusts to strong smells in the air and begins to ignore them.
The students went to sleep about a half-hour later, with electrodes on their
heads tracking the depth of their slumber. Neuroscientists divide sleep into
stages, including deep (or slow wave) sleep and the shallow, dream-rich
state called rapid eye movement (or REM) sleep.


The brain is thought to process newly acquired facts, figures and locations
most efficiently in deep sleep. This restful state usually descends within
the first 20 minutes or so after head meets pillow and may last an hour or
longer, then recur once or more later in the night. The researchers delivered
pulses of rose bouquet during this slow-wave state; the odor did not interrupt
sleep, and the students said they had no memory of it.


But their brains noticed, and retained an almost perfect memory of card
locations. The students scored an average of 97 percent on the card game,
compared with 86 percent when they played the game and slept without being perfumed
by nighttime neuroscience fairies.


The students did not get the same boost when they received bursts of the
fragrance just before sleep or in REM sleep rather than in deep slumber, and
their improvements were not due to practice, the study found.
The study’s results could eventually help doctors improve patients’ memory
by devising treatments directed at deep sleep. As they age, people spend less
and less time each night in such sleep, and existing sleep medications do
not generally increase it. But pharmaceutical companies are investigating
compounds that do so.


Previous research has shown that regions of the cortex, the thinking and
planning part of the brain, communicate during deep sleep with a sliver of
tissue deeper in the brain called the hippocampus, which records each day’s
memories. What is most likely happening in that communication, the study’s authors
argue, is that the cortex is telling the hippocampus to reactivate the same
neurons that fired when a particular fact was noticed or learned. The
hippocampus does so, encoding the firing sequence in the cortex and thereby
consolidating the memory.


“We would expect spontaneous reactivation driven by the slow-wave sleep, but
by presenting the rose odor cues we intensified this activation and enhanced
the transfer of these memories,” said Dr. Jan Born, a neuroscientist at
Lübeck who undertook the study with Björn Rasch, Christian Büchel and Steffen
Gais.


Olfactory sensing pathways in the brain lead more directly to the
hippocampus than do visual and auditory ones. That may be why smells can so vividly
revive things past like forgotten joys or humiliations.


To check their reasoning, the researchers took M.R.I. images of some of the
students’ brains during their rose-scented slumber. As expected, regions of
the cortex became noticeably more active, as did the hippocampus.
The findings suggest that distinct sleep states may be specialized to
integrate different kinds of information. For example, the researchers found that
the rose scent did not enhance memories of a learned finger-tapping sequence —
a rhythmic memory that does not appear to be consolidated by the
hippocampus.


Likewise, given that the rose fragrance during REM sleep made no difference
to the students’ scores, it may be that the hues, horrors and hilarity of
dreams during REM reflect the brain’s efforts to integrate emotional, rather
than factual, memories, said Dr. Stickgold, of Harvard.


“Extracting patterns and rules and what we call the gist of a memory might
turn out to be antithetical to the process of nailing down the facts
themselves,” Dr. Stickgold said. “So, for instance, you might use REM to integrate
one, and slow-wave sleep for the other.”


The new findings hardly close the book on how memories are formed and
consolidated during sleep. Other scientists have found evidence that rather than
reactivation, the brain’s slow-wave state induces an overall weakening of
neuron-to-neuron signaling, making recently recorded memories look bolder by
reducing the background neural “noise.” And it may be, Dr. Born said, that both
processes are occurring during sleep: a pruning away of the noise of the day’s
irrelevant observations, and a replaying of its important ones.


Either way, the researchers said, the new findings are likely to prompt some
creative thinking on the part of students facing the terror of final exams.
(The German research group has preliminary evidence that acrid smells may be
even better in enhancing memory.)


“We use an apparatus to sense the onset of slow-wave sleep and deliver the
odor” in short, alternating bursts, Dr. Born said, adding, “I suppose for
some students it would not be too difficult to develop something like this.”
That’s what engineering departments are for.

The Diaphragm: The Spiritual Muscle

Though people talk often about the diaphragm, that large domed-shape
muscle that functions as the floor of the chest cavity and the ceiling
of the abdominal cavity, they seldom have any real sensation of its
many actions. Through its complex three-dimensional vertical,
horizontal, and angular movements, the diaphragm not only helps the
body take in the oxygen it needs but it also helps the body rid itself
of so-called waste products. Through these same movements, a healthy,
well-developed diaphragm also helps to open and close the various
breathing spaces of the body, release muscle tensions in the chest and
back, support the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, the
digestive system, and the immune system, and help us communicate
verbally from deep within. A poorly functioning diaphragm makes it
difficult for the breath of life to flow through us and express itself
in a free and healthy way.

Except for our very first inhalation at birth, when the diaphragm is
functioning well the in-breath, the taking in of the energy of life,
happens as a spontaneous reflex that occurs after a full exhalation.
When we empty our lungs of everything that is no longer necessary, we
are spontaneously and effortlessly filled with fresh air. Perhaps that
is one of the reasons that some teachers call the diaphragm a
spiritual muscle, and use the analogy of the diaphragm to explain what
happens when we learn to let go of the thoughts and emotions that keep
us imprisoned in our own self-image.

Follow your breath now for a few minutes, and pay special attention to
what happens as you exhale. Do you feel that your exhalation is
complete, or does it seem to stop prematurely? Do you try to grab for
air willfully at the end of the exhalation or does the inhalation
occur by itself in the form of a wave arising from the unknown? Just
take note of what actually happens.

Why Drinking Too Much Water Is Dangerous

On January 12, 2007, a 28-year old Californian wife and mother of three children died from drinking too much water. Her body was found in her home shortly after she took part in a water-drinking contest that was sponsored by a local radio show. Entitled "Hold Your Wee For A Wii," the contest promoters promised a free Wii video game machine to the contestant who drank the most water without urinating.

It is estimated that the woman who died drank approximately 2 gallons of water during the contest. When she and other contestants complained of discomfort and showed visible signs of distress, they were laughed at by the promoters and even heckled.

This tragic news story highlights the importance of understanding why drinking too much water can be dangerous to your health.

Whenever you disregard your sense of thirst and strive to ingest several glasses of water a day just because you have been told that doing so is good for your health, you actually put unnecessary strain on your body in two major ways:

Ingesting more water than you need can increase your total blood volume. And since your blood volume exists within a closed system - your blood circulatory system - needlessly increasing your blood volume on a regular basis puts unnecessary burden on your heart and blood vessels.

Your kidneys must work overtime to filter excess water out of your blood circulatory system. Your kidneys are not the equivalent of a pair of plumbing pipes whereby the more water you flush through your kidneys, the cleaner they become; rather, the filtration system that exists in your kidneys is composed in part by a series of specialized capillary beds called glomeruli. Your glomeruli can get damaged by unnecessary wear and tear over time, and drowning your system with large amounts of water is one of many potential causes of said damage.

Putting unnecessary burden on your cardiovascular system and your kidneys by ingesting unnecessary water is a subtle process. For the average person, it is virtually impossible to know that this burden exists, as there are usually no obvious symptoms on a moment-to-moment basis. But make no mistake about it: this burden is real and can hurt your health over the long term.

Forcing your body to accept a large amount of water within a short period of time - say, an hour or two - as several contestants did during the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest can be fatally dangerous to your health. Here's why:

If you force large amounts of water into your system over a short period of time, your kidneys will struggle to eliminate enough water from your system to keep the overall amount at a safe level.

As your blood circulatory system becomes diluted with excess water, the concentration of electrolytes in your blood will drop relative to the concentration of electrolytes in your cells. In an effort to maintain an equal balance of electrolytes between your blood and your cells, water will seep into your cells from your blood, causing your cells to swell.

If this swelling occurs in your brain, the bones that make up your skull hardly budge. The result is an increase in intracranial pressure i.e. your brain gets squeezed. Depending on how much water your drink in a short period of time, you could experience a wide variety of symptoms, ranging from a mild headache to impaired breathing. And as occurred recently in the tragic water-drinking contest, it is quite possible to die if you drink enough water in a short enough period of time.

This information is particularly important for parents to pass on to their children. Foolish water-drinking contests are not uncommon among high school and university students, especially while playing cards.

So how much water should you drink to best support your health?

The answer to this question depends on your unique circumstances, including your diet, exercise habits, and environment.

If you eat plenty of foods that are naturally rich in water, such as vegetables, fruits, and cooked legumes and whole grains, you may not need to drink very much water at all. If you do not use much or any salt and other seasonings, your need for drinking water goes down even further.

Conversely, if you do not eat a lot of plant foods and/or you add substantial salt and spices to your meals, you may need to drink several glasses of water every day.

Regardless of what your diet looks like, if you sweat on a regular basis because of exercise or a warm climate, you will need to supply your body with more water (through food and/or liquids) than someone who does not sweat regularly.

Ultimately, the best guidance I can provide on this issue is to follow your sense of thirst. Some people believe that thirst is not a reliable indicator of how much water you need, since many people suffer with symptoms related to dehydration and don't seem to feel a need to drink water on a regular basis. My experience has been that most people who are chronically dehydrated have learned to ignore a parched mouth. If you ask such people if they are thirsty and would like a piece of fruit or a glass of water, they will almost always realize that they are indeed thirsty.

Some people suggest observing the color of your urine as a way of looking out for dehydration. The idea is that clear urine indicates that you are well hydrated, while yellow urine indicates that you need more water in your system. While this advice is somewhat useful, it is important to remember that some chemicals (like synthetic vitamins) and heavily pigmented foods (like red beets) can add substantial color to your urine. Thumbs down for synthetic vitamins, and thumbs up for red beets and other richly colored vegetables and fruits.

The main idea that I wish to share through this article is to beware of mindlessly drinking several glasses of water per day without considering your diet, exercise habits, climate, and sense of thirst. And when you do find yourself in need of water, remember that you can get it from liquids and/or whole foods.

So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power:  200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex England ) school were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation:  High in fiber, including banan as in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:  One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:  Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:  Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness

Mosquito bites:  Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:  Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work?  Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work  leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at  5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:  The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control:  Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with  a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking:  Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6 and B12  they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends  oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels.  These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes:  According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine," eating  bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death from strokes  by as much as 40%!  So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. Footnote :  If your roses are covered with Aphids, drape banana skins over the  branches, I'ts amazing, but in a day or less, they are GONE! I've tried  it, and I couldn't believe it, no more aphids, as long as I save my banana skins for the rose bushes!

How We Process Information for Good Health

A recent message showed two ancient symbols that seemingly came from continents apart. Each was trying to convey information about how to be healthier.

Merri and Gary A. Scott lived off and on with a shaman and his apprentices for some years and one of the things they learned is that they practiced a form of combining consciousness and exercise in a type of yoga.  In short they combined exercise and prayer. Every day they have different prayers, a different sound and a different position they maintain while conducting their prayer. All of this is connected to the moon, sun and planets. Saturday for Saturn, Sunday, the Sun. Monday, the Moon, Tuesday (Mars day is Martes in Spanish), Wednesday is Mercury Day (Miercoles), Thursday (Thors day or Jueves) Jupiter Day and Friday (Viernes Venus Day). 

The particular exercise helps activate a number of muscle groups, but especially the abs and psoas muscles.

These positions recognize the importance of our chakras and how they process energy that gets sent through the spine to specific organs.  Each exercise is aimed at exercising the chakra, portion of the spine, organ and related muscle groups that are activated by the predominate planet of the day.

So let’s look at some of these muscle groups, the importance they play in health and how to improve them.

 

Dr. Joe Culbertson, DC, a friend, graduate of our Self Publishing Course and student of holistic health has been helping us explore these ideas. Here is an excerpt from his book “Secrets of the Spine.”

 

“Why abdominal muscles are so important and frequently so weak.

“Strong abdominal muscles can keep us from becoming susceptible to an amazing array of health conditions. This may be one of the most important muscular systems of the body, yet they do not functioning normally in 95% of the population. There are a number of causes. Overeating and insufficient exercise are not the leading variables.

“Indications that these muscles aren’t performing include weight gain, water retention, bloating in the tummy region,; problems with digestion, absorption, elimination, low back pain (acute and chronic), neck problems, headaches (especially of the sinus variety), and leg pain.  Abdominal muscle problems are more than just the front-end protrusion. Even when in fantastic shape, it is not uncommon for them to perform improperly. This is because the abdominal muscles are a functioning group. If one part is out of sync, the other parts are out as well.

“These muscles work as a team allowing the lower back and every organ, nerve, muscle, and bone that they influence (which is everything else within the body) to remain healthy. Each member of this team has a relationship to a particular organ.   

“For example anyone who has improperly functioning abdominals, also has psoas muscles that are excessively tight.

“This also works in reverse.  The psoas muscles and the abdominal muscles are connected in this antagonistic way. This means that if the psoas tightens, the abdominal muscles must relax and vise versa.  Thus if the psoas muscles are too tight, the abdominals must function in a weakened way regardless of their size or shape.

“There are many reasons for the psoas to be overly tight. A top reason is improper functioning of the kidneys. Knowing this can help us profoundly improve the performance of our abdominal muscles.  If we help the kidneys, we help the psoas muscles and this improves the abdominals.

“One way to help the kidneys is to restrict the types of fluid we are putting into our bodies.

“Substances like soft drinks, coffee, and alcohol stress the kidneys. Chlorinated water stresses them most of all.  Chlorinated water wears the kidneys down, and tightens the psoas.

“Just by changing to non-chlorinated water we help the psoas muscles which allows the abdominals the opportunity to resume a normal functioning pattern. Our abdominal muscles, like all the other muscles of the body, when they are balanced and functioning properly, strengthen and get in shape just with normal activity. The need for special exercise is eliminated if a true balance exists.

“You can go one step further.  Add a small amount of cranberry or lemon juice, or tea (any variety) to non-chlorinated water. This addition helps the kidneys process water more efficiently.  This is one small variable we can alter that helps our tummy muscles work as intended. Of course there is also how we think, the posture we have adopted, our life style, and the amount of exercise we actually get. I cover all this in my book that will be available soon. Living Close To Traffic Pollution Can Affect Lung Development

A newly published study in the The Lancet indicates that living close to freeway traffic can negatively impact lung development in children.

Children's lungs tend to grow rapidly between the ages of 10 and 18, and this most recent study concludes that steady exposure to airborne pollutants during this age range can lead to short and long term respiratory challenges.

The children in this study who experienced stunted lung growth lived within 500 meters (approximately a third of a mile) of a freeway. Children who lived 1,500 meters (approximately one mile) or more away from a freeway experienced normal lung development.

The study looked at a total of 3,677 children living in 12 southern

California

communities. The findings of this study took into account differences in regional air quality; even in areas with low overall regional pollution, children were found to be at risk of experiencing stunted lung development if they lived close to a major roadway.

Two common measures of lung function were used to assess lung development:

1.      Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second, also known as FEV1. This measure represents the volume of air that can be forced out of one's lungs in one second after taking a deep breath. FEV1 is considered to be one of the most important measures of pulmonary function.

2.      Maximum mid-expiratory flow rate, also known as MMEF. This measure represents the maximum volume of air that can be forced out of one's lungs during the mid-range (25-75%) period of one full exhalation. MMEF is also considered to be an important measure of pulmonary function and overall lung capacity.

Children who lived within 500 meters of freeway traffic were measured to have smaller eight-year increases in FEV1 and MMEF, which translated to a significant decrease in predicted lung function at 18 years of age. And such a decrease in lung function would certainly increase their risk of suffering with various cardiovascular and respiratory diseases during adulthood.

What follows are the take-home lessons that we can draw from this important study:

1.      When choosing a primary residence, to the extent that our life circumstances allow, we should try to choose a location that is a mile or more away from roads that are typically congested with traffic.

2.      We should aim to send our children to schools that are not so close to busy roads.

3.      We should remember that exposure to fresh air is a critical requirement for optimal health; regular exposure to fresh air is no less important to our health than eating healthy foods, getting regular, restful sleep, exercising our bodies, having mature and loving relationships, and consistently feeling emotionally balanced.

The sole of the foot carries the only acupuncture point which comes in
actual direct contact with the Earth. It lives in the central
antero-posterior axis just to the rear of the ball of the foot, in the
small indentation found there.

This a Wood point on the Water channel. The condition of sinusitis
involves variously, in its natural history, Earth, Metal and Water,
sometimes when inflamed, Fire, and by a sort of axial energetics, Wood.

Here is how any intervention on the foot will be seen to heal some
aspect of the condition:

Location of the sinuses at fault: frontal, maxillary, ethmoid, 'open'
into the airway, which is ruled by Metal.
Thus Metal [sinuses] is benefited because the point Kidney 1 on the sole
of the foot, rules Water, and this in 5 elemental terms, is the Child of
'Metal'. In short, this is a condition of a Child benefiting the Mother.

If the sinusitis has watery discharge, the Mother Metal is not
nourishing Water.
A simple massage of the point will rectify that.

If the sinusitis has a greenish discharge, the Water is not nourishing
Wood.
Again a simple massage of the point will help that. The very effective
Wood point lives in the angle formed by the metatarsals of the great and
second toe at the proximal end.

If the sinusitis has a tinge of blood, the Water is Sinking and Fire,
its natural foil, is Rising.
Again a simple massage of the point will help restrain that.

Somewhat off the point, folks these days rarely touch actual earth with
their feet, because most of the times these are in shoes, often made of
a dead animal's hide; or in slippers at home. As often the floor of the
home is tile, wood, or carpeted, almost certainly with synthetic fiber.

When this happens over a long period of time, Water, at its very first
point, loses the immediate memory of being poised on Earth.

Which is where Pathos enters, and Chaos is not far behind.

It's funny you mention the bottoms of the feet.... I use this spot a lot
with my daughter, as she seems to have a lot of PH problems. She gets to

AIDS:

    Conditions that stress or compromise the immune system will very often benefit from castor oil packs. Nowhere is this more obvious than with AIDS. I have talked with several AIDS patients who have added castor oil packs (usually for one hour a day) to their treatment regimen with very positive results. Within two weeks, it was not uncommon for them to see increases in their WBC counts (white blood cell counts), platelet counts, hematocrit readings and RBC counts (red blood cells).

    I should mention also that in addition to the castor oil packs most of those I talked to are also drinking a combination of olive oil and lemon juice to further stimulate lymphatic flow and liver activity. It can be made by blending the following:

1 clean whole lemon, (pulp, rind, seeds and all); 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil; 1 1/2 cups of distilled water; 4 rounded tablespoons of frozen orange juice concentrate. The blended material is then strained through a wire strainer to remove the pulp, which is discarded. The remaining liquid is divided in four equal portions of approximately 1/4 cup each and a portion is consumed with each of the three daily meals and before bedtime.

     Edgar Cayce attributed several actions to castor oil. Most were in one way or another related to the body's lymphatic system. However, he also alluded to the idea that castor oil has a vibrational quality that helps harmonize and promote healing within body cells.
